I was born in 1950 in East Germany Bautzen ( DDR), where
I spent my childhood. I later moved to West Germany. I'm Norwegian-German.
A special influence of my work was the
world famous art show documenta, occurring every five years in
Kassel. The documenta is the largest international exhibition
of contemporary art.
In 1977, at the documenta 6, I met the
artist Joseph Beuys and became a student at the Free International
University. Beuys' philosophy, shown in his aesthetic experience
and social sculptures, fascinated me, especially Beuy's credo:
"To make people free is the aim of art, therefore art for
me is the science of freedom."
I studied carving and sculpture in Berchtesgaden
and at the Schulungswerkstaette Geisler-Moroder, Elbigenalp, Austria
and with Master sculptor Ivan Whillock in Minnesota.
In October 2001, together with Christian
Schmid (Bildhauermeister, Austria) I began an ongoing project
oriented study to create new themes and forms of sculpture. We
are both interested in figurative challenges.
I see myself as an Expressionist in the
tradition of German-Norwegian Expressionists such as Wilhelm Lehmbruck,
Hermann Scherer and Edvard Munch. Modern influences are Joseph
Beuys and Gunter Blum.
In 1995 I bicycled almost around the
world. During my 9 month trip I visited Argentina, Chile, Australia,
Thailand, Singapore, Bangkok, etc. The people I met, their history
and culture are an ongoing inspiration for my work. An example
of this is the "Yamana Women" and Ayayema, both themes
that originated during my stay in Ushuaia/Argentina.
I work with elements of deformation,
reduction, internal expression and societal criticism.
Since moving to America in 1999, I live
with my wife in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park. The sparse
surroundings inspire me daily and accommodate my need for simplicity.
I work with wood, stone and bronze.
